Join us for 2010 Walnut Hills Festival, Saturday September 11th from 11am through 6pm.

This year’s festival will take place at the corner of Taft and Kemper, in the parking lots by the Bush Recreation Center and the Douglass Elementary School. “To” Not “Through” Update

A news conference was held in Walnut Hills on Wednesday April 14th to announce that Vice Mayor Roxanne Qualls is proposing the return to two-way traffic on East McMillan Street and William Howard Taft Road between Interstate 71 and Victory Parkway. Such a move would enhance the Walnut Hills business district and assist in making our neighborhood a destination rather than a thoroughfare.

Get Immersed In Walnut Hills

Give Back Cincinnati is hosting a Walnut Hills Community Immersion event on Saturday April 10th from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.. Give Back Cincinnati has organized this event as a way to intimately get to know our community. During the event, participants will engage in a walking tour to learn about the community’s history, arts, culture, small businesses, revitalization efforts and volunteer opportunities. New Gardening Season for WH Garden

The Julie Hanser Memorial Garden, located on 2625 Stanton Avenue, has the mission of “promoting healthy behaviors within the community by allowing seniors to exercise, eat healthily and socialize by raising and maintaining a vegetable garden.” Much of the garden’s harvest is also distributed among Walnut Hills seniors who are unable to leave their homes. Mercy Neighborhood Ministries (originally as Healing Connections Associates) has been fulfilling this mission since 2006.

As garden organizers, Connie Busemeyer and Sue Plummer, gear up for a bountiful 2010 growing season, they are seeking the following items:

large tomato cages (6 feet tall),
wire fencing roll(s), 6 feet tall, to wrap around tomatoes or squash planted in tires
trellis materials
- bamboo or wooden poles, 2-12 (6-8 feet, each)
- twine or string (for stringing among/between poles)
plastic bags
- Ziplocs (gallon size)
- garbage bags
gift card or certificate from a local garden store (to cover unplanned expenses)
plants
- flowers (2-3 dozen)
- herbs (no sage, please)
- cabbage
- squash
- pepper plants (4)
- tomatoes, all types (3 dozen)

Council Meeting

The Walnut Hills Area Council was founded in 1965 as a voice to represent the interests of the community. The council meets at 6:30 on the second Thursday of every month at the Frederick Douglass Elementary School at 2627 Park Avenue. During the meetings, residents are briefed on community events as well as future community developments.

Our next meeting will take place Thursday April 8th. All are invited to attend.

New Police Response Guidlines

The Cincinnati Police Department formed a Process Improvement Team to review the department’s Differential Response Program. Using 2008 data, policy changes were enacted to reduce unnecessary dispatches thus freeing officers’ time for more proactive police work within the community. Walnut Hills Area Council Business Group

The Business Group meets on the third Thursday of each month from 8:00 am to 9:15am in the Community Room of Douglass School (2627 Park Avenue). All businesses in the community are welcome to attend. New WHAC Board in Place

Kenny Boyle, Steve Carr and Kathryne Gardette, newly elected Board members joined re-elected and continuing Board members: Kathy Atkinson, Roy Green, Barbara Furr, Roy Green, Toni Miller, Toilynn O’Neal, Fred Orth and Clarence Taylor recently for a morning of reflection and preparation for the coming year.

Each Board member will be serving in a leadership role on the Executive Committee or on one of the standing committees as outlined in the Council’s recently revised by-laws. Those positions are filled as follows:

Treasurer: Roy Green
Assistant Treasurer: Steve Shipp (appointed by WHAC Business Group)

With Cincinnati 45206: Template for Tomorrow in hand, the group began to revisit the assets of the community and began to identify strategies that will allow the community to accomplish the goals set forth in Vision 2010.

The meeting calendar for 2010 was set with General Body meetings continuing to be held on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room at Douglass School, 2627 Park Avenue. Board meetings will be held on the 4th Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Harriet Beecher Stowe House, 2950 Gilbert Avenue.

Committee meetings will be set in the near future by Committee chairs in conjunction with resident committee members. As soon as these dates are available they will be posted on the website.

Anyone who has an interest in the quality of life in Walnut Hills is encouraged to get involved in the Council, the Business Group or any other Committee. Harriet Beecher Stowe House

The Friends of Harriet Beecher Stowe House, Inc. is a 501(C)(3) non- profit organization. The major focus of the organization is to enhance and support both community and historical activities related to the preservation of the Harriet Beecher Stowe House, located in the Walnut Hills community of Cincinnati, Ohio.

The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center has recognized the Stowe House as a freedom center/partner for its commitment to educating communities about freedoms.

The Harriet Beecher Stowe House is managed by the Friends of Stowe and administered by the Ohio Historical Society (OHS), a non-profit organization that serves as the State’s partner in preserving and inter- preting Ohio history, natural history and archaeology.
